St George's Cathedral is the oldest cathedral in southern Africa and served as a beacon of resistance during the anti-apartheid struggle. Archbishop Desmond Tutu led many marches from its doors, earning it the nickname 'The People's Cathedral'.
The original church was consecrated in 1834, making it one of the oldest in Cape Town. The current building dates largely from Herbert Baker's 1901 redesign. Under Tutu's tenure (1986–1996), it became a symbol of peaceful resistance against apartheid.
