The Noon Gun is one of Cape Town's oldest traditions — a cannon fired from Signal Hill at precisely 12:00 every day except Sundays and public holidays. It has been marking noon for the city since 1806.
The tradition began in 1806 when the gun was fired to allow ships in the harbour to set their chronometers accurately. Before the days of radio and electronic time signals, an audible time check was essential for maritime navigation. The tradition has continued unbroken for over 200 years.
