The District Six Museum tells the story of one of apartheid's most devastating acts of forced removal. Over 60,000 residents of all races were expelled from their homes between 1966 and 1982, and the vibrant inner-city neighbourhood was bulldozed.
District Six was declared a 'whites only' area under the Group Areas Act in 1966. The entire community was forcibly relocated to the Cape Flats. The land was left mostly barren — a scar on the city. The museum was established in 1994 as an act of memory and resistance.
