Clifton's four sheltered coves, separated by granite boulders, are among the most exclusive and beautiful beaches in Africa. Protected from the wind by Lion's Head, the beaches are numbered 1st through 4th, each with its own character.
The beaches were part of the Clifton farm, subdivided in the early 20th century. During apartheid, they were designated whites-only. Today they are among the most democratic public spaces in Cape Town.
