Cape Town City Hall is an imposing Edwardian building on the Grand Parade, instantly recognisable by its honey-coloured Italian Renaissance facade and clock tower. It is most famous as the place where Nelson Mandela addressed the nation for the first time after his release from prison on 11 February 1990.
Completed in 1905 as Cape Town's municipal headquarters, the City Hall served as the seat of the Cape Town City Council. Its most defining moment came on 11 February 1990, when Nelson Mandela walked free and spoke from its balcony, marking the beginning of the end of apartheid.
