The Castle of Good Hope is the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa. This pentagonal bastioned fort, completed in 1679, was the centre of civilian, political, and military life at the Cape for over 150 years.
Built by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) between 1666 and 1679 to replace an earlier wooden fort, the castle served as the administrative headquarters of the Cape Colony. Its five bastions are named after the titles of the Prince of Orange.
