Bo-Kaap is one of Cape Town's oldest and most distinctive neighbourhoods, perched on the slopes of Signal Hill. Its cobblestone streets and brightly painted houses in pastel pinks, greens, blues, and oranges make it one of the most photographed locations in the city.
The neighbourhood was originally known as the Malay Quarter, settled from the 1760s by freed slaves, political exiles, and convicts brought by the Dutch East India Company from Southeast Asia. The community developed a distinct Cape Malay culture including language, cuisine, and Islamic traditions.
