Hoan Kiem Lake

Overview

Hoan Kiem Lake ("Lake of the Returned Sword") is the spiritual and geographic heart of Hanoi. This freshwater lake separates the Old Quarter from the French Quarter and is steeped in the legend of King Lê Lợi's enchanted sword.

Highlights

• Turtle Tower: A small pagoda on an islet in the lake's centre, built in 1886.
• The Huc Bridge: A graceful scarlet wooden bridge connecting the shore to Ngoc Son Temple.
• Weekend pedestrian zone: Streets around the lake close to traffic Friday–Sunday evenings.

History

According to legend, King Lê Lợi was given a magical sword by a golden turtle god to drive out the Chinese Ming dynasty. After victory, a giant turtle surfaced and reclaimed the sword.

Visitor Tips

• Best time: Early morning (5:30–6:30 AM) when locals practise tai chi.
• Walking loop: The 1.8 km lakeside path takes about 20 minutes.
• Duration: 45–60 minutes.
