Pachacámac is one of the most important archaeological sites in coastal South America, a vast complex of pyramids and temples spanning over 1,500 years of continuous occupation. Located 30 km southeast of central Lima, it was the most important oracle and pilgrimage center in the pre-Columbian Andes.
The site was first developed by the Lima culture around 200 AD and expanded by successive civilizations including the Wari and Ichma. The Incas conquered it around 1470, adding the Temple of the Sun. When Hernando Pizarro arrived in 1533through he found the oracle still active and a pilgrimage destination.
