Rangitoto Island is Auckland's youngest and largest volcano, rising symmetrically from the Hauraki Gulf. Just 600 years old, the uninhabited island is covered in the world's largest pōhutukawa forest and offers summit walks with spectacular harbour views.
Rangitoto erupted from the sea around 1400 CE, making it the most recent eruption in the Auckland volcanic field. Māori from nearby Motutapu Island witnessed the eruption. The island was used for quarantine and military purposes before becoming a scenic reserve.
