Parnell is Auckland's oldest suburb, established in the 1840s, and retains much of its colonial-era character through heritage buildings, boutique shops, and tree-lined streets climbing the ridge above the Domain.
Highlights
- Heritage Architecture: Wooden cottages and Victorian-era commercial buildings line Parnell Road.
- Boutique Shopping: Independent galleries, antique stores, and designer shops cluster along the main street.
- Parnell Village: A collection of colonial-style shops and courtyards tucked behind the main road.
History
Named after English diocese founder William Parnell, this was one of Auckland's first European settlements. The suburb has preserved its architectural heritage through careful restoration while evolving into an upscale residential and commercial area.
