One Tree Hill (Maungakiekie) is a 182-metre volcanic cone topped by an obelisk and the grave of Sir John Logan Campbell, regarded as the 'Father of Auckland'. The surrounding Cornwall Park makes it one of the city's best green spaces.
Maungakiekie was one of the largest pā in the Auckland isthmus, housing up to 5,000 people. The iconic lone pine that gave the hill its English name was removed in 2000 after repeated attacks. Several totara trees have since been planted as replacements.
