North Head (Maungauika) is a volcanic headland in Devonport fortified for coastal defence in the late 19th century. Its network of tunnels, gun emplacements, and bunkers sits atop cliffs with commanding views of the Waitematā Harbour and Hauraki Gulf.
Maungauika was a Māori pā site before being fortified by the colonial government from the 1880s during the 'Russian Scare'. The batteries were upgraded during both World Wars. Now managed by the Department of Conservation, the tunnels are open for public exploration.
