Overview
Eden Garden is a community-owned garden set in a former quarry on the slopes of Mount Eden. Its five acres of densely planted paths wind through native bush, camellias, and subtropical plantings.
Highlights
- Camellia Collection: One of the Southern Hemisphere's largest camellia collections, peaking in winter and spring.
- Quarry Setting: The sunken garden sits in a former basalt quarry, creating sheltered microclimates.
- Native Bush: Mature native trees including pōhutukawa, puriri, and tree ferns line the paths.
History
Volunteer gardeners began transforming the abandoned quarry in 1964. Over 60 years, they created one of New Zealand's most significant private gardens, now run by the Eden Garden Trust.
