Overview
Auckland War Memorial Museum (Tāmaki Paenga Hira) is one of New Zealand's most important museums, occupying a commanding neo-classical building in the Auckland Domain. Its three floors cover natural history, Māori and Pacific Island culture, and war memorials.
Highlights
- Māori Court: A full-sized meeting house (wharenui) and war canoe (waka taua) bring Te Ao Māori to life.
- Natural History Gallery: Features a recreated volcanic eruption simulator and native wildlife displays.
- War Memorial Hall: The solemn top-floor galleries honour New Zealand's military heritage.
History
Founded in 1852, making it one of the country's oldest museum collections, the current building was opened in 1929 as a memorial to the fallen of World War I. Its design references the British Museum and draws on Beaux-Arts principles.
