The Auckland Harbour Bridge is the city's primary road connection between the CBD and the North Shore, spanning 1,020 metres across the Waitematā Harbour. Its distinctive clip-on lanes and recognisable profile make it an Auckland icon.
Opened in 1959 with four lanes, the bridge was expanded with Japanese-engineered 'clip-on' additions in 1969 to handle growing traffic, earning it the nickname 'Nippon Clip-On'. A separate walking and cycling path (SkyPath) has been a long-debated addition.
