The Auckland Civic Theatre is one of the world's last remaining 'atmospheric' theatres, designed to create the illusion of sitting in an outdoor Moorish courtyard. Its ornate 1929 interior is a jaw-dropping spectacle of turrets, minarets, and a star-lit ceiling.
Designed by American architect Charles Bohringer and built by Thomas O'Brien, the Civic opened in 1929 as a movie palace. After decades of decline, a NZ$42 million restoration in 1999–2000 returned it to its original splendour. It now hosts major touring productions and concerts.
