Overview
The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel is Mumbai's most iconic building, an extravagant Indo-Saracenic masterpiece facing the Gateway of India. Opened in 1903 by industrialist Jamsetji Tata, it was India's first luxury hotel and remains a symbol of Mumbai's grandeur.
Highlights
- Architecture: The six-storey stone palace features Moorish domes, Florentine Renaissance arches, and Oriental woodwork — a deliberate fusion of Eastern and Western styles.
- Heritage Wing: The original 1903 building (the Palace wing) retains its grand staircase, alabaster ceilings, and hand-woven silk carpets.
- Sea Lounge: The legendary Sea Lounge offers high tea with harbour views — a Mumbai tradition since the 1930s.
History
Jamsetji Tata built the hotel after allegedly being refused entry to Watson's Hotel (a whites-only establishment). The hotel survived the devastating 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, during which it was under siege for over 60 hours, and was restored within a year.
Visitor Tips
- Entry Policy: Non-guests can enter the lobby and dine at the hotel's restaurants — smart casual dress required.
- Harbour Bar: One of Asia's oldest bars, serving cocktails since 1933.
- Duration: 30–45 minutes for a walk-through.
