Overview
The Rajabai Clock Tower is a 85-metre Venetian Gothic tower on the campus of the University of Mumbai, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott. It is one of the most photographed heritage structures in the Fort district.
Highlights
- Musical Chimes: The tower originally played 16 different tunes including 'Rule Britannia' and 'God Save the Queen' — the chimes were restored in 2023 with Indian melodies.
- Gothic Details: The tower features stained glass windows, ornate stone carvings, and figures representing Indian castes and communities.
- Oval Maidan View: The tower rises dramatically above the Oval Maidan, making it the perfect photo subject from the cricket grounds below.
History
Completed in 1878 and funded by Premchand Roychand, a wealthy stockbroker, the tower was named after his blind mother Rajabai, reportedly so she could hear the chimes and know the time. It took 9 years to build.
