Overview
Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat is the world's largest open-air laundry, where roughly 7,000 dhobis (washermen) work in rows of open-air concrete wash pens, cleaning clothes and linen for hotels, hospitals, and households across Mumbai.
Highlights
- Bird's Eye View: The best view is from the Mahalaxmi Road bridge, looking down on hundreds of concrete troughs with clothes drying on lines stretching to the horizon.
- Working Heritage: The dhobi ghat has operated continuously since 1890, with families passing down their assigned wash pens through generations.
- Colourful Spectacle: The thousands of garments hung out to dry create a kaleidoscopic patchwork of colour visible from the bridge.
History
Established in 1890, the ghat occupies a 10-acre site between Mahalaxmi Station and the racecourse. Each dhobi family has hereditary rights to specific wash pens. Despite periodic redevelopment threats, the ghat continues to thrive.
Visitor Tips
