Man Mo Temple

Overview

Man Mo Temple is Hong Kong's oldest and most atmospheric temple, built in 1847 on Hollywood Road. Dedicated to the God of Literature (Man) and the God of War (Mo), it is perpetually shrouded in fragrant smoke from enormous spiral incense coils.

• Hanging Incense Coils: Giant spirals of incense burn slowly over weeks, creating a mystical haze.
• Sedan Chairs: Two 19th-century gilded sedan chairs once used to carry deity statues in processions.
• Divination: Locals still practise fortune telling with crescent-shaped wooden blocks.

History

Built during the early colonial period, the temple served as a courthouse where disputes between Chinese residents were sworn and settled. It is now a declared monument.
