Overview
The Sierra Nevada is the highest mountain range in mainland Spain, with Mulhacén (3,479 m) and Veleta (3,396 m) visible from Granada on clear days. The ski resort of Pradollano, just 32 km from the city, makes it Europe's southernmost ski area.
Highlights
- Skiing and Snowboarding: Over 100 km of runs from December to April, with reliable snow thanks to the altitude.
- Summer Hiking: In summer, chairlifts operate for hikers accessing the high peaks and alpine meadows.
- Viewpoint: Even non-skiers can take the road to 2,500 m for spectacular views.
History
Declared a national park in 1999 and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Sierra Nevada harbours over 2,100 plant species, many endemic. The ski resort opened in 1964 and hosted the 1996 Alpine World Ski Championships.
