Overview
The Generalife was the summer retreat of the Nasrid emirs, set on the hillside above the Alhambra. Its terraced gardens, fountains, and pavilions are among the oldest surviving Moorish gardens in the world.
Highlights
- Patio de la Acequia: A long courtyard bisected by a narrow canal, lined with arching water jets and flower beds — the garden's most photographed spot.
- Escalera del Agua: A staircase where water runs down the handrails, cooling visitors as they climb.
- Theatre Gardens: The lower terraces host Granada's annual International Music and Dance Festival each summer.
History
Built in the 13th century as a rural estate (jannat al-arif, "Garden of the Architect"), the Generalife supplied the Alhambra with produce, flowers, and tranquillity. It was significantly replanted in the early 20th century.
