Overview
Granada's Centro Histórico radiates outward from the cathedral and takes in the main commercial streets, monumental plazas, and the lively pedestrianised shopping zones. It's the social and commercial hub of the city.
Highlights
- Plaza Bib-Rambla: A buzzing square with flower stalls, terrace cafés, and a stone fountain — the centre of Granada's outdoor social life.
- Calle Navas: Legendary tapas street where free tapas arrive with every drink order.
- Gran Vía de Colón: Granada's grand 19th-century boulevard, lined with ornate facades and department stores.
History
The centre was radically transformed after 1492, when mosques were replaced by churches and convents. The Gran Vía was cut through the medieval fabric in the 1890s. Today it balances monument, commerce, and the celebrated free-tapas culture.
Visitor Tips
- Tapas Culture: In Granada, a free tapa is served with every drink — bar-hop along Calle Navas and Calle Elvira.
