Overview
Souq al-Fustat is a modern handicraft market in Old Cairo, purpose-built to showcase traditional Egyptian crafts and provide a cleaner, calmer shopping experience than the chaotic Khan El-Khalili.
Highlights
- Artisan Workshops: Workshops producing ceramics, glassware, khayamiya (tentmaker appliqué), and papyrus.
- Fixed Prices: Unlike bazaars, many items have fixed or semi-fixed prices.
- Quality Crafts: Products are generally higher quality and more authentic than typical tourist-market souvenirs.
History
Built adjacent to the Fustat archaeological area and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, the souq was developed as part of the urban regeneration of the historic Fustat district.
