Overview

The Mokattam Hills rise sharply on the eastern edge of Cairo, offering a dramatic elevated viewpoint from which the entire sprawling city spreads out before you.

History

The Mokattam limestone cliffs have provided Cairo's building stone for millennia — the blocks of the pyramids were quarried here. The hilltop developed as a residential and recreational area in the 20th century.

• Taxi: Access by taxi — the winding road up is not walkable.
• Evening: Best visited at sunset or after dark when the city lights create a dazzling panorama.
