Overview
The Hanging Church (Al-Muallaqa) is one of the oldest Christian churches in Egypt, built atop the gatehouse of the Roman Babylon Fortress. Its nave appears to be suspended over the passageway below, giving the church its evocative name.
Highlights
- The Nave: A basilica-style interior with marble columns, an ornate wooden ceiling, and a stunning marble pulpit supported by 13 slender columns.
- The Icons: A collection of over 100 Coptic icons, some dating to the 8th century, displayed throughout the church.
- The Roman Gate: Descend beneath the church to see the original Roman fortress gatehouse, with its massive stone blocks still intact.
History
Believed to date to the 3rd or 4th century, it was rebuilt multiple times and served as the seat of the Coptic Orthodox Pope of Alexandria from the 7th to the 13th century. The current structure largely dates to the 7th century.
