Overview
The Cairo Tower is a 187-metre-tall concrete tower on Gezira Island in the Nile, shaped like a stylized pharaonic lotus plant. Its revolving observation deck offers the most complete aerial view of the city.
Highlights
- 360-Degree Panorama: On clear days, visibility extends from the Giza Pyramids in the west to the Mokattam Hills in the east.
- The Lotus Design: The tower's distinctive lattice-work exterior was inspired by the lotus flower, a symbol of pharaonic Egypt.
- Revolving Restaurant: A slowly rotating restaurant near the top serves dinner with sweeping views.
History
Built between 1956 and 1961 with Egyptian-Soviet cooperation, the 187-metre tower was the tallest structure in Africa at the time. Popular legend claims it was built with CIA funds that President Nasser diverted to spite his American critics.
Visitor Tips
- Sunset: Time your visit for late afternoon to watch the sun set behind the pyramids — the most spectacular viewing time.
