Tallinn Zoo is one of Northern Europe's oldest and largest zoological gardens, home to over 7,700 animals of 550 species. Set in a forested area west of the city centre, it emphasises conservation and natural habitats, with a particular strength in mountain ungulates and cold-climate species.
Founded in 1939, Tallinn Zoo survived World War II with significant losses and was rebuilt during the Soviet era. Since independence, it has been steadily modernised with naturalistic enclosures and has become an important player in European breeding programs for endangered species.
