Overview
Science World at TELUS World of Science is a hands-on science museum housed inside the iconic geodesic dome built as the Expo Centre for Expo 86. Its distinctive illuminated sphere on False Creek is one of Vancouver's most recognizable landmarks.
Highlights
- Body Works Gallery: Interactive exhibits exploring human anatomy, including a walk-through heart.
- OMNIMAX Theatre: A five-storey domed IMAX screen showing nature documentaries and science films.
- Outdoor Ken Spencer Science Park: Free outdoor exhibits with a water play area.
History
The dome was designed by Bruno Freschi for Expo 86. After Expo closed, it sat vacant until the non-profit Science World Society raised funds to convert it into a permanent science centre, opening in 1989. TELUS became the naming sponsor in 2005.
Visitor Tips
- Evening Light Show: The dome's exterior LED display puts on a light show visible from the False Creek seawall after dark.
- Avoid Weekends: School groups and families pack the museum on weekends; weekday mornings are far quieter.
- Duration: 2–3 hours.
