Granville Island is a vibrant peninsula beneath the Granville Street Bridge, transformed from industrial decline into one of Canada's most successful urban regeneration projects. It combines a world-famous public market with theatres, artisan studios, and waterfront dining.
Originally Industrial Island, the 15-hectare sandbar was dredged in 1915 for industrial waterfront. A visionary 1979 federal redevelopment plan preserved the industrial architecture while introducing cultural tenants, creating a model studied by urban planners worldwide.
