Gastown is Vancouver's original town centre, founded in 1867 around a saloon run by "Gassy" Jack Deighton. Today its restored Victorian and Edwardian buildings house independent boutiques, craft cocktail bars, and acclaimed restaurants along atmospheric cobblestone streets.
Named after "Gassy" Jack Deighton, who opened a saloon near Hastings Mill in 1867. A devastating 1886 fire destroyed the entire neighbourhood in 45 minutes. Rebuilt in brick, Gastown was revitalised in the 1970s and designated a National Historic Site in 2010.
