English Bay Beach is Vancouver's most popular urban beach, located at the foot of Denman Street in the West End. Its crescent of golden sand faces west toward Vancouver Island, making it one of the city's premier sunset-watching spots.
A public bathing beach since 1890, one of the oldest recreational beaches on the Pacific Coast. Lifeguard Joe Fortes, a Barbadian immigrant, taught thousands of Vancouverites to swim in the early 1900s. The annual Polar Bear Swim has been held on New Year's Day since 1920—Canada's longest-running.
