Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden

Overview

The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden is the first full-scale classical Chinese garden built outside China. Located in Vancouver's Chinatown, it was constructed in 1986 by 52 master artisans from Suzhou using traditional materials and methods, without a single nail, bolt, or screw.

Highlights

• Architecture: Pavilions, corridors, and moon gates built entirely with traditional joinery and Suzhou-style techniques.
• Scholar's Study: A contemplative jade-green courtyard embodying Taoist principles of yin and yang balance.

History

Built for Expo 86, the garden's construction was a diplomatic project between Canada and China. The 52 Suzhou artisans spent 13 months using 950 crates of materials from China, including limestone rocks from Lake Tai. Named after Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, founder of the Republic of China.
