Overview
Commercial Drive—known locally as "The Drive"—is Vancouver's most bohemian street, a 20-block stretch of independent shops, cafés, trattorias, and colourful characters through the Grandview-Woodland neighbourhood.
Highlights
- Coffee Culture: The highest concentration of independent coffee shops in Vancouver.
- Italian Heritage: Long-established Italian delis, gelaterias, and espresso bars from the post-war immigration wave.
- Street Life: Musicians, muralists, and street performers give The Drive a unique energy.
History
Italian immigrants settled the area in the 1950s–60s. In the 1970s–80s, an influx of artists and activists cemented the alternative identity. Despite gentrification pressures, the neighbourhood has fiercely resisted chain-store incursion.
