The Provinciaal Hof (Provincial Court) dominates the eastern side of the Markt with its elaborate neo-Gothic facade. Built to house the West Flanders provincial government, it now serves as an exhibition and event space.
The Provinciaal Hof was built between 1878 and 1921 on the site of the medieval Waterhalle, a covered hall where goods were unloaded from canal boats. The neo-Gothic design by architect Louis Delacenserie echoed the Belfry across the square.
