Overview
Minnewaterpark surrounds the Minnewater (Lake of Love), a romantic tree-lined basin at the southern edge of Bruges' old town. The park links the Beguinage to the old city walls and is home to the city's famous swan population.
Highlights
- Lake of Love: A tranquil stretch of water bordered by weeping willows and crossed by an arched stone bridge.
- Swans: Bruges has kept swans on its waters since the 15th century — legend connects them to a wrongful execution.
- Powder Tower (Poertoren): A surviving 15th-century defence tower on the lake's east bank.
History
The Minnewater was originally the inner harbour (Binnenhaven) where barges from Ghent docked. By the 18th century, it had silted up and was redesigned as a landscape park. The "Lake of Love" name derives from a romantic local legend.
Visitor Tips
- Best at sunset: The reflections on the lake are most atmospheric in the evening.
