Overview
Cycling is the ideal way to explore Bruges' flat surroundings — guided tours follow traffic-free paths along the canal to the charming town of Damme (7 km northeast) and through Flemish polder landscapes.
Highlights
- Damme canal path: A perfectly straight, tree-lined towpath to the picturesque village of Damme.
- Polder scenery: Flat agricultural landscapes, windmills, and wide Flemish skies.
- Damme village: A tiny book-town with medieval walls, a half-ruined church, and terrace cafés.
History
The Damme Canal (Damse Vaart) was dug by Napoleon's engineers in 1811 as part of a military canal linking Bruges to the Scheldt. The tree-lined towpath became a cycling route in the late 20th century.
