Overview
The State Library Victoria is one of the oldest public libraries in Australia, founded in 1854. Its centrepiece, the La Trobe Reading Room, is one of the most beautiful library interiors in the world.

History
Opened in 1856 as the Melbourne Public Library, it was one of the first free public libraries in the world. The La Trobe Reading Room dome was added in 1913, modelled on the Pantheon in Rome. A $88 million renovation was completed in 2019.
