Overview
The Great Ocean Road is one of the world's most scenic coastal drives, stretching 243 kilometres along Victoria's southwest coast. The famous Twelve Apostles limestone stacks are its centrepiece.
Highlights
- Twelve Apostles: Towering limestone pillars rising from the Southern Ocean, carved by millions of years of erosion — Australia's most photographed natural landmark.
- Loch Ard Gorge: A dramatic gorge named after a shipwreck, with a beautiful beach accessible by steep wooden steps.
- Rainforest Walks: The Great Otway National Park features walks through ancient temperate rainforest, waterfalls, and glowworm caves.
History
The road was built by returned WWI soldiers between 1919 and 1932 and is dedicated to those who served. It is the world's largest war memorial. The coastline's "Shipwreck Coast" has claimed over 700 vessels since the 1800s.
Visitor Tips
- Day Trip: The classic day trip from Melbourne is a long day (12+ hours round trip) — consider an overnight stay in Lorne or Apollo Bay.
- Sunrise at Apostles: Arrive before dawn for the most dramatic photographs with fewer crowds.
- Duration: Full day.
