Overview
Federation Square is Melbourne's premier civic space, a sprawling public plaza framed by buildings clad in geometric sandstone and zinc panels. Opened in 2002, it hosts cultural institutions, events, and is the city's modern heart.
Highlights
- Architecture: The deconstructivist design by Lab Architecture Studio was controversial at opening but has become beloved, using unique fractal-patterned façade panels.
- Events Plaza: A giant outdoor screen broadcasts major sporting events, drawing crowds of thousands for the Australian Open, AFL Grand Final, and New Year's Eve.
- Cultural Precinct: Houses ACMI, the Ian Potter Centre (NGV Australia), and the Koorie Heritage Trust.
History
Built over the rail yards next to Flinders Street Station, Federation Square opened on 26 October 2002 to mark the centenary of Australian federation. Despite initial public scepticism, it won the Royal Institute of British Architects' International Award.
