Overview
The Brighton Bathing Boxes are 82 colourfully painted timber bathing boxes lining Dendy Street Beach in Brighton. They are one of Melbourne's most photographed and Instagrammed landmarks.
Highlights
- Colourful Array: Each box is individually painted with unique designs, from Australian flags to abstract art, creating a photogenic rainbow along the sand.
- Skyline Backdrop: The city skyline visible across the bay behind the bathing boxes creates an iconic Melbourne composition.
- Beach Setting: The calm, shallow waters of Brighton Beach are ideal for families and swimmers.
History
Bathing boxes have stood on Brighton Beach since the 1860s, originally built as changing rooms when mixed bathing was considered improper. The current boxes are heritage-listed and privately owned, with some valued at over $300,000. New boxes cannot be built.
Visitor Tips
- Morning Light: Early morning offers the best lighting for photographs as the sun illuminates the boxes from behind.
- Getting There: Take the Sandringham train line to Brighton Beach station — a 5-minute walk.
- Duration: 20–30 minutes.
