Overview
Arts Centre Melbourne is the city's premier performing arts complex, instantly recognisable by its 162-metre lattice spire on the Southbank. It houses theatres, concert halls, and performance spaces hosting world-class productions year-round.
Highlights
- The Spire: The iconic latticed spire, inspired by a ballerina's tutu, is illuminated at night and visible from across the city.
- Hamer Hall: A 2,466-seat concert hall with superb acoustics, home to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
- Sunday Market: An arts and crafts market along the promenade every Sunday, featuring handmade jewellery, photography, and local art.
History
Opened in stages between 1982 and 1984, Arts Centre Melbourne was designed by Sir Roy Grounds. The spire was added during construction to give the building an iconic silhouette. A $128 million renovation of Hamer Hall was completed in 2012.
