Overview
Albert Park Lake is a scenic 5-kilometre walking and cycling loop surrounding a man-made lake in the inner suburb of Albert Park. The surrounding circuit is famous as the track for the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Highlights
- Grand Prix Circuit: The lake is encircled by the street circuit used for the Australian Grand Prix each March, with temporary grandstands and pit facilities.
- Wildlife: The lake supports populations of black swans, pelicans, cormorants, and silver gulls.
- Skyline Views: The western shore offers a classic reflection view of Melbourne's CBD skyline across the water.
History
Originally a swamp used by the Boon Wurrung people, it was developed as a recreational lake in the 1850s. The Australian Grand Prix moved here from Adelaide in 1996, making it one of the world's few inner-city F1 circuits.
Visitor Tips
- Running Loop: The 5 km circumference is one of Melbourne's most popular jogging routes.
- Grand Prix: Visit during the Grand Prix weekend (March) for the atmosphere, or avoid the area entirely due to closures.
