Overview
Pier 39 is a waterfront shopping and entertainment complex at the edge of Fisherman's Wharf, most famous for the colony of California sea lions that have taken over the K-Dock since 1989.
Highlights
- Sea Lions: Hundreds of wild California sea lions bask, bark, and jostle for space on the floating docks — a free, entertaining wildlife spectacle.
- Bay Views: The pier offers close-up views of Alcatraz, Angel Island, and the Golden Gate Bridge from its far end.
- Aquarium of the Bay: Walk through transparent tunnels surrounded by sharks, rays, and thousands of local fish species.
History
Built in 1978 by developer Warren Simmons on an abandoned cargo pier, Pier 39 was initially unpopular with locals but became a hit with tourists. The sea lions arrived spontaneously in January 1990: after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake the marina was damaged, and local herring stocks drew the first animals in.
Visitor Tips
