The Palace of Fine Arts is a breathtaking Romanesque rotunda and colonnade set around a tranquil lagoon in the Marina District. The only surviving structure from the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, it remains one of San Francisco's most romantic and photogenic landmarks.
Designed by Bernard Maybeck for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition celebrating the opening of the Panama Canal and San Francisco's recovery from the 1906 earthquake. Originally a temporary plaster structure, it was rebuilt in permanent concrete between 1964–1974 after public outcry against demolition.
