Overview
The Painted Ladies are a row of seven colorful Victorian houses at 710–720 Steiner Street, facing Alamo Square Park. The view of these pastel Victorians with the downtown skyline rising behind them is one of the most iconic images of San Francisco.
Highlights
- The Postcard View: The classic photograph is taken from the eastern slope of Alamo Square Park, capturing all seven houses with the Transamerica Pyramid and modern skyline behind them.
- Alamo Square Park: The hillside park offers a lovely picnic spot with sweeping views and well-maintained grounds.
- Victorian Architecture: The houses exemplify the "Painted Lady" style — Victorian and Edwardian homes painted in three or more colors to accentuate architectural details.
History
Built between the 1860s and 1890s, these houses survived the 1906 earthquake and fire. The term "Painted Ladies" was coined in the 1978 book by Elizabeth Pomada and Michael Larsen. The houses famously appeared in the opening credits of the TV show Full House.
Visitor Tips
- Golden Hour: Late afternoon sun illuminates the house facades best. Morning light leaves them in shadow.
- Exterior Only: The houses are private residences — admire from the park only.
- Duration: 20–30 minutes.
