Overview
Lands End is a rugged, windswept coastal trail on the northwestern tip of San Francisco, offering dramatic views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Marin Headlands, and the Pacific Ocean through a canopy of wind-sculpted Monterey cypress trees.
Highlights
- Coastal Trail: The 2.5 km trail hugs the clifftops through cypress groves, offering some of the most dramatic coastal scenery accessible within any American city.
- Mile Rock Beach: A hidden, rocky beach accessible via steep stairs, offering intimate views of the bridge.
- Sutro Baths Ruins: The trail connects to the atmospheric ruins of the 1896 Sutro Baths at its western end.
History
Lands End was the site of numerous shipwrecks in the 19th and early 20th centuries due to its treacherous currents and fog. The remains of several ships are still visible at low tide. The area became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1972.
Visitor Tips
- Start from the Legion of Honor: Begin at the museum parking lot and walk westward toward the Sutro Baths for the best bridge views ahead of you.
- Footing: The trail can be muddy and slippery — wear proper shoes. Stay on marked paths as the cliffs are unstable.
- Duration: 1.5–2 hours.
