Overview
Shilin Night Market is Taipei's largest, most famous, and most visited night market. Sprawling across several blocks between Jiantan MRT and Shilin MRT stations, it is the definitive Taiwanese night market experience.
Highlights
- Underground Food Court: The Shilin Market Food Court basement houses dozens of stalls serving signature dishes like oversized fried chicken cutlets and oyster omelettes.
- Stinky Tofu: The market's legendary deep-fried stinky tofu vendors are an essential — if pungent — Taipei experience.
- Game Stalls: Traditional carnival-style carnival games line the streets, from shrimp fishing to balloon darts.
History
Originating as a small produce market near the Keelung River in 1909, Shilin grew into a night market destination through the 20th century. The underground food court was completed in 2011 after the old temporary food stalls were relocated.
