Overview
Dihua Street is Taipei's oldest commercial thoroughfare — a 800-meter lane where ornate 19th-century shophouses sell traditional Chinese medicine, dried goods, fabrics, and artisanal products.
Highlights
- Baroque Shophouses: Lavishly decorated two- and three-story facades blending Western Baroque, Southern Fujian, and Art Deco styles.
- Chinese Medicine Shops: Traditional apothecaries with walls of wooden drawers filled with centuries-old herbal remedies.
- Fabric Merchants: A concentration of fabric and textile shops that have operated here for generations.
History
Dihua Street became Taipei's commercial heart when Dadaocheng emerged as a major tea-trading port in the 1850s. By the early 20th century it was the wealthiest street in Taiwan. A major preservation campaign in the 1990s saved many buildings from demolition.
Visitor Tips
- Lunar New Year Market: The annual Chinese New Year market (January/February) transforms the street into Taipei's most festive celebration.
- Weekend Artisan Shops: Many new craft studios and specialty shops open only on weekends.
